Spelling
Spelling Aims
Our intention at Steyning C of E Primary School is to develop confident spellers in KS2, with a strategy that dove-tails with the teaching of Phonics and the knowledge acquired which underpins the progression in spelling. We work in a way that celebrates children’s progress on a week-to-week basis, encouraging them to learn examples of words embodying each pattern which is taught, sharing new ways to practise their spellings in a fun and engaging way, learn spelling rules including those listed as ‘exception words’. We will encourage children to learn the statutory words and spellings required for years 3 and 4 and years 5 and 6, emphasising to pupils the relationships between sounds and letters, even when the relationships are unusual. We encourage children to use their learning when writing and celebrate their successes along the way.
