Science Aims

At Steyning C of E Primary School, we encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at the school and beyond. The Science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity and respect in children about the world around us. We believe science encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills, and positive attitudes.

Science Values

Love – We want the children to develop a love for Science and we will do this by having regular events such as Science Weeks, visitors and the opportunity to explore the local area. We want children to be awed by the fun and wonder that science can offer.

Happy - Children are at their happiest when they are fascinated with new experiences and in Science, we can offer bangs, mess, fizz and wonder. We believe that science should be practical, investigative and enquiry based. We want to hook the children with different trips to the local environment, and practical workshops.

Respect - Teachers find opportunities to develop children’s understanding of their surroundings by accessing outdoor learning and workshops with visitors and experts. Children are taught to respect their local environment and the world, recognising problems faced such as pollution and deforestation.

Collaborative – Children are encouraged to work together with their peers to solve problems, ask questions and investigate sharing their knowledge, excitement, and curiosity with each other. They will challenge and motivate each other to develop a better understanding of the sciences.

Curious – Children are encouraged to ask their own questions and be given opportunities to use their scientific skills and research to discover the answers. This curiosity is celebrated within the classroom. We want children to learn how science has impacted their lives and how science will impact their futures as technology develops.

Brave – Children are supported to challenge their way of thinking, to take risks and to be prepared to share their ideas with their peers and teachers. We want the children to be brave enough to develop an informed scientific opinion to challenge issues.
